Production과 Manufacturing은 주로 “제작 혹은 생산”을 의미하며, 같은 의미로 쓰인다. 그러나 두 단어는 매우 큰 차이점이 존재한다. 

 

간단히 설명하면, Manufacturing은 원자재로부터 판매할 수 있는 유형의 제품으로 완성되는 공정을 의미한다. 제작된 제품은 직접적으로 최종 고객에게 판매될 수 있어야 한다. 이렇듯 manufacturing은 구매된 원자재를 최종 제품으로 완성시키는 수많은 프로세스들을 포함한다. 원재료에 가치를 부여할 뿐만 아니라 부여된 가치를 위해 자재를 소모하는 모든 프로세스를 의미한다. 수많은 계획들은 이에 해당한다. 일반적으로 사람, 기계, 원재료가 요구된다

 

반면에, Production은 여러 종류의 input을 유,무형의 output으로 변환하는 프로세스이다. 주로 Production은 공익사업물의 생산을 의미한다. 이는 생산품 및 서비스를 포함한다. 생산성은 다음의 방법으로 측정된다

Manufacturing은 Production일 수 있으나, Production은 Manufacturing에 포함하지 않는다는 것을 위의 표로부터 알 수 있다. 아래의 내용을 보면, 두 단어의 핵심적인 차이점을 알 수 있다.

 

원자재가 기계로 인하여 제품이 생산될 때의 그 input이 Manufacturing일 때, 
자원이 완성된 제품으로 변형되는 프로세스를 Production 이라고 한다.

 

Manufacturing은 사용하거나 판매하기에 적합한 모든 제품의 발생으로 이루어져 있다.

 

Manufacturing은 기계의 사용이 필수인 반면, Production은 기계의 사용 없이도 가능하다.

 

Manufacturing 활동의 모든 종류는 Production으로 사용 가능하지만,
Production은 Manufacturing가 아닐 수도 있다.

 

Manufacturing은 발생되는 output이 유형물이다.
그러나, Production은 물건이나 서비스 같은 유형, 무형의 output을 생산한다.

 

제품의 Manufacturing은 인력-기계 셋업이 요구되는 반면,
Producing output은 인력만이 필수적으로 요구된다.

 

 

What is the difference between production and manufacturing?

 

Manufacturing and Production are often used as same terms but there is a big difference between them.

Simply put, Manufacturing is the process to convert raw material to a ready to sale finished product that is tangible. The manufactured product can be directly sold to end customer. Manufacturing involves many processes to convert procured raw material to a finished product. Almost all the processes add value to material but also consume some material for adding value. A lot of planning goes into this. Mostly men, machine and material is required as resource.

On the other hand, Production is process to convert any type of inputs to output, tangible or intangible. Mainly Production is creation of utility. Utility includes both goods and services. Productivity is measure of production that is defined as following way:

It is clear from the chart that manufacturing is production but production of a utility may or may not involve manufacturing. I’ve listed key difference between production and manufacturing in next paragraph.

1. When the raw material is used as input to produce goods with the use of machinery is known as a Manufacturing. The process of transforming resources into finished products is known as Production.

2. Manufacturing consists of the generation of all those goods that are suitable for use or it can be sold out. Conversely, production involves the creation of the utility.

3. In manufacturing, the use of machinery is a must whereas production can be done with or without the use of machinery.

4. All types of manufacturing activities are used in production, but production may not necessarily be known as manufacturing.

5. In manufacturing, the output generated will be tangible in nature, i.e. goods only, but in the case of production, it produces both tangible and intangible outputs, i.e. goods as well as services.

6. Men-machine setup should be there for manufacturing of goods, which is not in the case of production, the only man is sufficient for producing output.
